What social media guys really think about 'viral'

Ommasociallogo I'm at OMMA Social today, where I participated in a panel about the role social media plays in the overall marketing mix.  Our moderator, SocialVibe's Joe Marchese, kicked things off by asking us to blurt out the first thing that comes to mind when a client tells us that they'd like to do something 'viral.'

The three bloggers on the panel -- Adam Broitman, David Berkowitz and I -- didn't mince words: we don't like so-called 'viral marketing.' And I'm proud to say that my response was probably the most colorful (or at least laced with the greatest number of four letter words.)  Here's a bit from the Mediapost Raw blog:

Social Vibe’s Joe Marchese got his panel on social media off on a psychological note, asking his panelists to say what comes to their mind when they hear the word “viral.”

Two of the five panelists said it made them sick to their stomachs. One implied it was lethargic.

“I think I get sick,” said 360i’s David Berkowitz.

“Like David, when I hear the word viral I want to throw up,” concurred crayon’s Greg Verdino. “I think shut-the-f-up.”

Morpheus’ Adam Broitman had another take: “When I hear the word viral the first thing that comes to mind is lazy.”
